About

Allison Hay, a smiling white woman with brown eyes and light brown hair, hugging a green book titled Garner's Modern English Usage.

Sometimes I can’t believe I get away with it. I make a living with words.

I love words and sentences. I love fussing over them until they’re in their proper places.

As a copyeditor and proofreader for more than 15 years, I’ve professionally fussed over hundreds of projects in a variety of fields, including nonfiction trade books, best-selling romance novels, award-winning health magazines, archaic English literature, and classified war-crimes testimonies.

I also love to learn. Over the years, I’ve gathered a pocketful of academic credentials: a BA in psychology, a post-grad diploma in journalism, a professional translation certificate, and a professional editing certificate. As a member of Editors Canada, I stay on top of the latest news in the editing world, and I’m always strengthening my skills by participating in courses and webinars.

Every day at Fox Street Editing, I’m happy to help writers improve their projects. As I fine-tune each piece for accuracy, consistency, and more, I follow my guiding principles: clarity and connection. This means I fuss over the details of language in support of the writer’s voice, and I help connect more readers to interesting and important words.

I get to do this for a living.

Sometimes I think I might have outfoxed everyone.

Thank you to all my clients for sharing so many of your words with me.
